Launched in 2019, Women’s Eye is an initiative and a platform mothered by Kigali Center for Photography with a mission to inspire girls and women in visual storytelling and photography by supporting a learning environment that empowers women and non-binary artists to enhance their practice towards self-expression and the journey to becoming professional artists.
The Women’s Eye Photo Initiative strives towards training women and non-binary artists in photography, with a vision to increase the number of women in the field.
Each year, we organize a series of activities involving female photographers, visual artists, educators, students and the broader public to provide a space for sharing experiences, knowledge and insights, promoting solidarity and mentorship. By amplifying women's voices, the initiative aims to inspire change, advocate for diversity through visual storytelling, and promote gender equality within the field of photography.
MENTORSHIPSThese mentorship programs build community, bringing visual artists together to network and learn. They provide professional feedback from an experienced artist-mentor sessions through constructive critique. And they impart valuable information regarding the business of being an artist. |
EXHIBITIONSThe photo exhibition by women photographers initiative is essential as it provides a platform to showcase diverse perspectives and experiences through their lens. It celebrates the empowerment of women in the photography industry, shattering stereotypes and challenging social norms. |

Mentees will receive interactive and comprehensive instruction that will provide the tools each needs to succeed in the creative and photography industry. Provided with space for creation and exposition, mentees are in this process introduced to a network of diverse and dynamic of women in the industry and have access to an open work space.
UMWALI
This is a vocational training program designed to introduce photography to young girls in their communities and to develop new skills and learn step by step the art and science of photography and visual storytelling .
A number of girls and young women aged 18-25 across the country interested in the fields of photography and storytelling will be selected to attend the program in their communities. These trainings take place in different regions of the country each year in collaboration with our partners. The participants will complete the program with new perspectives and the knowledge of how to create a story through photography/visual storytelling and create opportunities for their careers in the long run. |
